SOPHOMORES

PLAN

All sophomores will take the PLAN in the fall. The PLAN is a college readiness test specifically designed for 10th grade students and is a great way for students to prepare for the ACT. It covers the same subject areas as ACT, English, math, reading and science. Research suggests that students who take the PLAN score higher on the ACT than those who do not. The PLAN also includes an interest inventory which can help students identify careers that match their interests.  For more information on PLAN, visit www.planstudent.org

Ohio Graduation Tests

In order to graduate, it is required that you pass the OGT. You will be tested in 5 areas: reading, mathematics, writing, science and social studies. You will take the OGT in March of your sophomore year. Here is some information from the Ohio Department of Education that will help you perform at your best!

General Test-Taking Tips

  • Get plenty of rest the week of testing
  • Eat a good breakfast each morning
  • Be confident of your ability and give your best effort

Types of Questions on the OGT

  • Multiple-Choice
  • Short Answer
  • Extended Response

Tips for Multiple-Choice Questions

  • Read the entire question before attempting to answer it
  • First, try to answer the question without looking at the choices. Then, look at the choices to see if your answer is the same as, or is close to, one of the choices
  • Don’t keep changing your answer. Usually your first choice is the right one, unless you did not read the question correctly

Tips for Short-Answer and Extended-Response Questions

  • Read the directions carefully
  • If the question is asking for facts, do not give your personal opinion on the topic
  • Reread your response once it is completed. Doing so helps you make sure that the required task has been completed thoroughly and accurately
  • Address all parts of the question
  • Focus on one main idea per paragraph
  • If you have time left at the end of the test administration period, proofread your work and correct any errors

Time Management

  • You have more time than you are likely to need
  • Answer the easier questions first so that you can spend more time on the harder questions
  • Be sure to answer all the questions
  • Use any extra time to go back and check your answers, making sure the choice you marked on the answer sheet is the one you wanted
