·         Whether you’re an aspiring journalist working on a school paper or someone who’s wondering if journalism might interest you, The New England Center for Investigative Reporting‘s summer workshop is a perfect opportunity to learn and explore.

·         Spend two weeks this summer on the Boston University campus in a unique program that will teach you the basics of investigative reporting.

·         Starting on day one you’ll work on investigative stories that could be published in your school newspaper or in major media outlets around New England.

·         You’ll study with award-winning local and national journalists, including university faculty, and spend one morning each week visiting area newsrooms.

·         This is an opportunity for current juniors to have a taste of college level coursework and to earn college credit applicable to future study.

·         The program will take place July 6th-15th on the Lipscomb campus in Nashville, Tennessee

·         Course offerings for this year include: Fundamentals of Biology, Introduction to Psychology, Foundations of Business, Introduction to Communication, The Future of Computing, Art Appreciation, and Freshman Seminar on the Humanities. Students enrolled in any of these courses will earn 3 transferrable college credit hours

·         A $750 program fee will cover cost of room, board, and activities in Nashville

·         Summer Scholars is selective and only students who have scored a 24 or better on the ACT or 1090 or better on the SAT will be considered for admission.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital: Mechanisms of Human Health and Disease

·         Mechanisms is a fast-paced, in-depth program designed to challenge the serious science student who is interested in medicine or medical research. Students in the Mechanisms program investigate cancer and other disease topics with lectures from research experts. At the final class, students present their research paper to family, teachers and researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This course is lecture and activity based. There is no lab component.

·         Prerequisites for the program are high school biology and chemistry (Class is designed for incoming seniors).

·         Selection for the course is highly competitive as up to 20 candidates will be chosen.

·         Students must attend and participate in all class and group project sessions.

·         Students should expect to spend an average of 10-15 hours each week on readings, research and papers outside of class

·         Students will be required to read 2 books, one of which must be completed before class begins.

·         The top student in the class will be given the opportunity to participate in an internship at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital

·         Have you ever wondered what types of trees are in Ohio’s forests? What kind of relationships organisms forge with the forest? This, and much more, will be learned through this camp.

·         In addition to small group instruction, campers will have opportunities for free time each day to engage in various group and individual activities including volleyball, swimming, softball, boating and fishing. Campers also participate in Adventure Valley at Camp Muskingum. This portion of the camp is designed to help build confidence and trust within each small group.

·         The camp is open to all students who are at least 15 years of age.

·         The camp dates are June 10-15th and the fee is $325. Many campers receive financial assistance from a sponsor. The Ohio Forestry Association, Inc. is happy to help link campers to potential sponsors.

·         Applications for the camp must be received 3 weeks prior to the beginning of camp and are processed on a first come, first-served basis. Space is limited, so you are encouraged to apply early!

Ohio State Medical Center, Columbus, OH: High School Summer Volunteer Program

·         Volunteer positions allow students to gain valuable insight into the hospital environment while providing a meaningful service to our patients, visitors or staff.

·         Requirements for the program include:

o    Minimum 16 years of age at the start of volunteering

o    Letter of recommendation from teacher or counselor

o    Interview, orientation and training

o    Criminal background check

o    20 hour commitment of service over the summer (must be able to volunteer for one, 3-4 hour shift per week)

o    Be responsible and dependable

o    There may be additional requirements based on your placement

·         The Equine day and residential camps offer fun and educational activities that revolve around Otterbein’s horses and run the gamut from daily riding lessons and horse handling to equine behavior and communication. Campers will also learn how to administer first aid and evaluate lameness. Equine nutrition, massage and braiding are also important components of this exciting hands-on camp.

·         Summer College offers opportunities for students to explore possible majors, build resumes and portfolios, experience college life, get a feel for SU as an option for undergraduate study, and earn college credit.

·         Summer College students return to high school motivated and excited about their studies with a better understanding of what is to come after they graduate high school.

·         Each Summer College program is designed to provide a realistic view of college coursework and are all taught by University faculty and instructors.

·         MD Camp is an intensive, 3-week summer day camp that gives participants an experience in the rigors of medical school. It is open to Juniors, Seniors and recent high school graduates who are interested in pursuing careers in the health professions including biomedical research and who are considered an underrepresented minority or disadvantaged student in medicine.

·         For both WiE Rise and WiE Race, program dates are July 15-20, 2012; Participation fee is $350 (limited scholarships are available)

·         WiE RISE is a six-day, residential summer program for high school women who are going into grade 12 in the fall following the camp. This camp is sponsored by the Honda-OSU Partnership Program.

·         WiE RACE is a six-day, residential summer program for high school students, both men and women, who are going into grades 10 or 11 in the fall following the camp. This camp is sponsored by The Honda-OSU Partnership Program and OSU's College of Engineering.

·         For both programs, applicants should have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale and a B+ or higher in all math and science courses. Students must provide a personal statement that shows a genuine interest in pursuing an engineering degree. A teacher recommendation is required.

University of Akron, Akron, OH: Summer Experience in Engineering (SEE UA) Summer Camp

·         SEE UA! camp at the University of Akron is an engaging one week residential summer camp for girls entering the ninth through twelfth grades that immerses the girls into aerospace, biomedical, civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical and mechanical polymer engineering. Each day is comprised of fun-filled hands-on engineering activities in the morning led by talented faculty, followed by dynamic tours of local engineering firms and then campus-wide activities in the evening. The students also spend the week working as a team on an engineering design project or research project and then compete against other student teams at the end of the week. Students live in residence housing located on campus where the resident assistants are upper-class engineering students. While there, they can experience the life of a college student while exploring various engineering disciplines available at the University of Akron. Even the resident assistants are upper-class engineering students.

·       Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit in criminalistics or pre-medicine that can be applied to Xavier or other colleges

·       Students will live on campus like a Xavier students and experience college life (eat in a residence hall, have full access to all the recreational, educational facilities, etc)

·       Enjoy off-campus trips in Cincinnati

·       Participate in college-readiness activities that will prepare you for campus visits and writing college essays

·       Cost is $2,350 and includes tuition, on-campus housing, meals, activities, books and supplies. Scholarships are available!
